Correlation of Electromyography, Myelography and Surgical Findings in the Herniated Lumbar Disc

Abstract
From January, 1975 to July, 1975, fifteen cases with herniated lumbar disc were referred for electromyographic examination to the Electromyographic Laboratory of Severance Hospital. Seven of fifteen cases were proven by laminectomy to have herniated lumbar disc. In five of seven operated cases, diagnosis was established by electromyography before operation. Four of seven operated cases were diagnosed preoperatively by myelography. Accuracy of diagnosis by electromyography is similar to that of myelography. All patients who underwent sugery were diagnosed preoperatively by either electromyography or myelography.
Abnormal electromyographic potentials signifying root compressionn by a herniated lumbar disc consist of polyphasics, fibrillations and positive sharp waves.
In lumbar root compression syndrome, both myelographic and electromyographic studies will increase the accuracy of diagnosis.
